May 14, 2018 (Vancouver, Canada) – GeoComply announced that it is ready to support all State Legislators and iGaming companies with geolocation solutions in response to today’s repeal of PASPA. With the repeal of PASPA, all states in the US will now be able to independently decide whether or not to allow regulated sports betting in their jurisdiction. Prior to the PASPA repeal, only Nevada offered legal sports betting on single sports events.
“In anticipation of the PASPA repeal, we’ve been working hard to ensure our geolocation solutions are ready to meet the new opportunities and challenges resulting from the Supreme Court decision,” says GeoComply Founder and CEO Anna Sainsbury. “Whether or not a state decides to legalize sports betting, we are prepared to support the state legislators and iGaming companies in order for them to stay compliant with all regulations regarding the geolocation verification of a player.”
GeoComply’s geolocation solutions verify that a player’s wager is placed from a location authorized for legal sports betting, to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.
The Supreme Court decision was made in response to New Jersey’s challenge of the constitutionality of PASPA. The federal statute, implemented in 1992, made gambling on professional and collegiate athletics illegal; Nevada was the only state offering legal sports betting on single sports events. With the PASPA repeal, a report published by US gambling research consultancy Eilers & Krejcik Gaming indicated that up to 30 states could introduce licensed sports betting bills.
